Because it's a shop usually located on the corner of your street? If it isnt on the corner then it's usually referred to as something you might not want to repeat

A "liquor store" is just an offy (off-licence) to me.

I think he means a cigarette but I have rarely heard anyone outside of the north east use that word in that context if he does.

I have seriously only ever heard anyone outside of the north east use the word tab maybe once or twice. I leave the north east and say im goin for a tab and people think im retarded.

It is predominantly a North East thing but I use a lot of slang and some is not related at all to where I come from.
