Out of the bands you listed, I probably like Arctic Monkeys the best though

I dislike hipsters/indie music elitists in general, how they think they're something special just because they listen to 'unaccessible' music, and think 'independently'. And their stupid nerd glasses.

I like air quotes :D

I love 'Indie' music for what it is these days, a genre. People that shun bands because of how big they are do my fucking head in. I prefer bands that are accessible, bands that don't have a Wiki page are a pain in the fucking arse.

I don't get how Indiefags or "hispters" actually enjoy listening to music that's harder to get hold of. A Wiki page makes life so much easier.

Indiefags are the British version of hipsters I think, Indiefags aren't as annoying as Hipsters. Hipsters seem to listen to a lot of obscure noise pop and surfer stuff. Indiefags just listen to really bland Indie bands that sound like The Kooks without the radio airplay or record deal. I actually like a bit of Hipster type music, like Wavves for example. But because of their fan base, and how hyped they are they are hated for it. I think these hipster folk do listen to some good music, but because they take pride in how obscure it is, they won't get credit for it. Because they're arseholes.

I have one or two indie*** friends. I swear they avoid the charts like the plague. I genuinely don't understand how they can live their life like that (bit dramatic maybe, probably not) but I love the fact that you could shuffle my iTunes and could hear Sugababes, Mogwai, Godspeed! The Strokes and Kelly Clarkson.

I think it's just insane when people restrict themselves with music, especially in case their status is damaged by listening to some bands with actual commercial recognition.

So I guess you could say that I dislike people trying too hard to conform to a certain scene, it's more effort than it's even worth. Get over yourself.

The great thing is when you reach your 30s, if you're not a person who listens to the radio or has cable, you have absolutely no clue what music is popular and what isn't. As result you just listen to music that you enjoy, oblivious and uncaring about how popular it is or isn't. This is the point I'm at in life. Sometimes when I post on here I'm astonished at how popular a band I like is, sometimes I'm astonished at how unknown they are.

Being in your 30s doesn't have any effect on whether you give a sh*t about what's popular and what isn't, I'm 18 and I'll listen to whatever I want. Regardless/unaware of anything that goes with it.

Re-read my post. I'm not talking about giving a shit, I'm talking about the level of awareness of what is and isn't popular. When you're younger you somehow can't help but be aware of which bands are on the charts and whatnot, but as you get older you lose touch with that.

Not according to what you said a few posts ago:

I fall under both: I don't give a shit, and I'm unaware. I don't think being in your 30s determines it, I'm just not exposed to it much. I know Lady Gaga is the in thing at the moment and that's about it.. I have no idea who are really in the charts. Probably her and JLS or something. I wouldn't have a clue what rock bands are popular at the moment. Are there even any popular rock bands about at the moment?

I think you are way more aware than you think you are. How else would you know all this:

I've experienced being in my teens and being in my thirties, trust me on this one: it's a totally different level of unawareness when you get older.

I don't know fersure. The only thing I'm certain of is Lady Gaga is quite popular at the moment, and if that makes me aware then great. But I don't really know I could be any less aware than I am at the moment, not through trying. I just don't work at a place where I can listen to radio, I don't watch music channels, I don't have friends that take an interest in music..

I'm glad I don't have it in my face, I don't hate anything in the charts because it's so oblivious to me I can't hate something I'm not exposed to.

I totally see what Janszoon is saying.

When I was in my early 20s I used to regularly read the weekly music press, Listen to Lamacq & Peel, all of my friends were really into all sorts of music and would discuss it with me & I would regularly go clubbing and checking out what was new there.

These days I don't bother doing any of that & most of my friends have much more important priorities than talking about & following music. My only contact with what's happening comes from the odd snippet on TV or radio & this forum.

I like having the freedom to listen to albums both past & present with pretty much no expectations.
