It has mate. Wasn't even a big day of football and it completely took over Twitter.

Every time I set the trends to the US on match day in England, the top trends are pretty much all related to English football.

Soccer has blown

That's because they actually care about growing the sport and have pushed to get the games on American TV, unlike the hockey guys who seem to have no qualms about their audience ever seeing a game on TV. Backwards, but kudos to the English football representatives who know how to get things done.

Can't knock the whoring of the brand

tbf I would rather it didn't get big in the US. Because I know it will go the same way as it has in Asia and Africa - the entire continent 'supporting' the same three or four clubs and making the gap even bigger for clubs like my own.

It's definitely weird. We've had Major League Soccer for years, but it's never really caught on as a preeminent sport. Seems like the English football guys are more determined, or have more money, to get the sport to the people.

Sort of related but do you remember that lad who was being touted as the new Pele? Freddy Adu

That was one of the most bizarre things I've seen. 14 years old in the MLS, 16 playing for the US national team and Nike were pushing him hard.

But he was absolutely shit

Last I saw he was advertising hoovers on Twitter

Don't recall it at all, but it's not surprising that a MLS player would be stuck selling Hoover Uprights due to the sports lack of mainstream popularity here. MLS has never been on the level of European football, so someone from Europe following the league here is also a surprise. I know of MLS, but don't follow it.

MLS = Merican League of Soccer, right?
