Actually, traditionally speaking, in Germanic languages "ei" would be pronounced "eye", whereas "ie" would be pronounced "ee". Don't know why we pronounce "their" the way we do, but those people saying that "thier" would be pronounced "th-eye-r" didn't really know what they were talking about. Least as far as I know.
