The Stanley Cup is named after Frederick Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby, who was from the UK. He was appointed Governor General of Canada, whereby he developed an appreciation for Canada. The hockey team is from Chicago, as has been noted. So that's three continents involved, geographically.
