Am I the only one that believes that empathy comes from a place of narcissism because it requires you to see yourself in another's shoes and project your own ego on to them?

Like, I don't want this to happen to me, so I don't want it to happen to you because you are now an extension of my ego.

Is that not self obsessed?

It can be like that, but I think that's a very limited way to view it.

Well its like, you typically have the most empathy towards your family and friends or the people who remind you of yourself the most. You have the least empathy for the people who's beliefs out right contradict yours because you reject them so much that you just don't want to see yourself in them.

So a liberal sees another liberal get punched they have much more empathy because they can easily see a reflection of them self in that person. Focus on similarities. Hey, that person reminds me of me. I don't want me to get hurt.

But if a liberal sees a Nazi get punched they typically have much more apathy towards the Nazi. I reject this idea so much that this difference obscures any similarities we may have and I have a hard time seeing myself in that person. Me and that Nazi are nothing alike. I don't care because they are separate from me.

Frownland 01-03-2018 06:45 AM

Or you care about the person and don't like how their life has been affected in a negative way.

Over your head, Frown, the reason you care about them is because they are an extension of your own ego. You care about people that remind you of your self in one way or another.

Or because they are nice to you.

Your point isn't invalid, it's just not as universal as you're making it out to be.

Am I allowed to directly vote against one of the nominations instead of voting for another one?

Still seems like it's an extension of your ego. "I care about this person because they are nice to ME"

It explains why when we lose the people we feel the most compassion and love for it feels like we lose a piece of ourselves. Because we do, they become such a huge piece of your own identity.
