I love people with pretty handwriting - I think it's very telling how a person writes.

I've also found that it's much easier to compose with a pencil than with a keyboard--things flow more smoothly. I always write essays by hand, then type them out. Takes longer, but the results are infinitely better.

 story of my goddamn life.

I can't convey what I need to say when I'm just typing it out. I can't.

Typing is for general banter. Writing is for shit that matters.

While we're on the subject, here's some of mine. Whenever I learn a song on piano that I intend to sing, I make a point of writing out the lyrics. It aids both my memory and my expression. This is one I scrawled out yesterday--my penmanship's better when I take my time.

You people need to stop using cursive! Anyone who uses it writes so fast that any benefit to speed is completely outweighed by the illegibility. I hate getting post cards from my family. I love them and all, but it means I'm going to have to spend the next two minutes trying to decipher handwriting I'd need an Enigma machine to understand.

I know the feeling. The physical connection between myself, my hand, the pen, the paper, and what I put on paper makes the process feel much more natural. Although, I write slowly enough that I'm almost willing to sacrifice that for just being able to get it over and done with already.

Editing is far easier on a computer though: quicker and less of a hassle obviously, but for some reason when it's all starkly laid out before me on a computer screen, things I need to change jump out at me much more easily. Not to mention spellcheck.

Addressing the three bolded points:
  1. Once you get used to someone's handwriting, it's much easier.
  2. An Enigma machine isn't any good without the codebooks.
  3. That's why I type it out once the first draft is done.
I read an essay on the subject once, and I think the flow is superior because you're actually creating individual characters rather than simply hitting keys.

A lot of debate judges write in cursive and it makes their ballots exceptionally hard to understand. That's why I'm really happy that it looks like electronic balloting is becoming the norm. That said, some people flow (take notes, although there's a specific format for it) on their laptops, and I could never do that - I've tried, and my flow is way better organized, more complete, and more useful when I do it by hand. (Also, because the way you flow involves abbreviations everywhere, spellcheck is a massive pain if you type.)

I know what you mean--I'm still puzzling over some of my piano adjudication sheets.
