That's wild. Technically a dust devil though right?

Dust devils are actually just sand- (or "dust"-) based. This is kind of a step up.
Maybe you could call it a tumbleweed dust devil, but that's stretching the def some. On one of our New Mexico trips, we were walking towards the car and I said - rather innocently - something like "oh, cool, look at that!" while pointing at a dust devil coming right towards our car as we were approaching it in a parking lot. Sharon screamed, "Get in the car! Get in the car!" and, holy shit, was she right! We got inside just in time for it to start rockin' the car side to side for a few seconds. It definitely would've taken us off our feet outside of the car. It wasn't nearly as large as the one in the following video tho, so I wasn't completely unaware, but for such a small thing that couldn't have been more than a foot wide, it was surprisingly strong. The first video one is more widely dispersed, so not as intense as a closely coiled one that's smaller. Here's one outside Deming NM - on Hwy 10. We travel on this hwy and go thru this town at least twice a year and see these almost every time. Last edited by rostasi; 05-06-2020 at 12:04 PM. |

I saw a lot of them growing up in Arizona. I remember my mom pulling the car over when I was a toddler and a massive dust devil was taking up the road coming right toward us. It looked like a dust storm. It shook the hell out of the car and we could feel it dragging the car back onto the road, but it passed pretty quickly. I also remember playing a baseball game when a small one sparked up while I was doing a yawning stretch and flung a bunch of dirt in my eyes, nose, and mouth. That one was worse tbh
