I really want to play dnd but am too intimidated to ask the established groups i know of

There are tons of skype and discord communities you can easily get involved in.. might be easier to play with strangers.

Playing DnD with them seems a good opportunity to recruit for Magic.

Check to see if there are any game shops near you. A lot of them will feature a night or two for running DnD games for all skill levels. There's a few around here anyway that do that.

Yeah we have a comics/game shop that hosts events. It's just always a bunch of batlords there.

You should make friends with people other than your dog.
