It's not a church it's a symbol of national identity that makes people feel less insignificant. If they have one less symbol of themselves then they are less of themselves then they were the day before. Without those things we'd all be living in soviet housing blocks eating gruel.

I mean I'm not totally justifying it but I do think there's a need for symbols like that. Humans need culture and milestones to make them feel like their and their species' time on this earth has been worthwhile. Building the Pyramids, the Great Wall, the Magna Carta, going to the moon, even splitting the atom are all things that make existence feel less transient and pointless, and feeding the homeless instead won't change that.

Just leave it as is and in 1000 years the burnt remains will have the same reverence
