But I like their first album a lot although there was room for improvement and it was a bit bloated.

I would say that I'm still in the process of trying to really appreciate that band. The songs don't quite stick for me quite like Vuur does or her solo albums (which are not metal but rather variants on alternative pop/rock). I have two albums with The Gathering and I like both, but I still haven't quite loved any of it. Maybe except the song "On Most Surfaces".
My favourite version of it is performed live with Vuur. ****ty sound quality on the video, but still somehow a more enjoyable version of the song than the one on the Gathering album it comes from.
