Also there is a difference between a best before date and a use by date. You do have to be careful with meat and poultry, but those can both be off even if they are within the expiration date so you should be checking them anyway. Basically just do what animals do and look at it then smell it and if its OK it's safe to eat.

I was always taught that you shouldn't eat anything past its expiration date. That's the whole point of calling it an expiration date. If it were a recommendation, it should say that, or figure out when the actual expiration date is. Like I said, i have an irrational fear of eating something past its expire date and getting sick. So I just follow the expiration date.

Who taught you that? There are two different types of dates. Best before and use by. Both of them mean different things. Best before = quality is at it's best before that date but fine to eat past that date, if you are throwing stuff away because it's past its best before date you are wasting perfectly good food. Use by = use by this date. But that's not always accurate either.

Lolz. It's not always possible to accurately say within a 24 hour period when something is going to be fine to eat or not. How has it been stored? Has it been frozen? The dates are recommendations that's why you check it yourself before eating.

You've more than likely eaten meat that's off before and not known it or gotten sick tbh.

I don't think you know what irrational fear means. Obviously I know it's not the right way to look at it but its how I was taught and brought up.

Cuthbert 08-04-2018 08:43 AM

You're trying to explain your irrational fear as if it's rational.

Sorry. Wasn't intended that way. I'm saying that I was always taught to believe that the expiration date is meant to be taken a bit seriously, though I know what you mean about the different types. However, I've always just put it all into one area to make it easier on myself. I'm just trying to explain my irrational fear is all. Not saying it's the right way of thinking.

Its OK no problem. Let's eat some raw chicken together. One day past its use by date but should be OK.

I have a bottle of mustard that expired two years ago and it's fine.

Good to hear, Charles.

Don't think I've eaten something two years past its date but I eat eggs that have passed the date by weeks.

The Batlord 08-04-2018 10:31 AM

My guess is that it takes too long for mustard to go bad for anybody to bother figuring out so they just slap a date on there cause **** it.
