i recently found a disc to play. it was randomly in my parents garage and i grabbed it right away. im going to give it a shot at the place where i hoop at. the course is in the woods though and im worried a bit about getting posion ivy from walking around the woods finding my disc :o:

maybe i can find a different course too, just havent looked into it.

What kind of disc? Does is have a stamp or ink on it?

The best way to start is to throw low speed discs, like midrange or fairway drivers and even putters in some cases. The reason I say this is because a lot of people grab high speed drivers right away and those will only turn and burn on you until you get proper form, which is key. They lose interest after not being able to throw well and get discouraged.

Here's some good tips:

Have fun and throw well.

Putting is the hardest part of the game, even more so in a psychological sense than any other aspect of it. People miss from 5-10 feet away because they have already missed in their minds. It definitely builds psychological strength, especially when confronted with the dreaded 'Death Putt':

Disc golf discs are specially made for disc golf. If you just have a Frisbee then, I mean there's no reason you can't play with it but you're not really playing disc golf. It would be like trying to play basketball with a soccer ball.

That's why you don't start with putting, you start with throwing it as far as you can and thinking how cool it is that you almost beaned your friend in the head when he wasn't anywhere near you. It doesn't take that much skill to make it go a bit far so long as you're not too bothered with exactly where it's going.

That's why I asked what markings it has. The big Whamo Frisbee/Ultra style ones are made to stay aloft but travel at slower speeds with less distance since they have a much deeper profile, while a disc golf disc is more aerodynamic and thinner. Putters are the closest to the original Frisbee style so it's more stable in flight. Here's a good profile comparison between a Driver, Mid, and Putter:
