They have a handful of songs that could be described as that I think.

They pushed rock music closer to metal in a big way, so people pin the genre on them despite them never really reaching that point.

Would you say any band invented it? Who had the biggest influence in your opinion?

**** I've seen people say include Zep, The Beatles (:D for Helter Skelter), Deep Purple obviously Sabbath. Can't think of anyone else.

I've never thought of Zep, or even Sabbath for that matter, as metal. Hard rock, yes, but not metal. They may have inadvertently pushed other bands into a harder edged sound, like Priest and Maiden, who were really the only bands I considered metal when growing up listening to all of them as they spit out albums. Then I heard Slayer.

The obvious answer. Sabbath introduced the plodding drums and heavy guitar tone and nothing was ever the same after that.
