If you solved it and got 1 then you probably just wanted to get 1. Is this simply based on the parentheses? Would it help you if they had awkwardly transitioned into an "x"?

It would make more sense for them to write as such, certainly. People like you are what made the Challenger crash.

Given how I'm the only one who put it in the form of a practical word problem, I think the Challenger analogy is strongly in my favour.
