Does vinyl sound better than CD? Just wondering why the vinyl buyers on here choose that and not CD considering it's more expensive.

I buy rarely, only when I see a good deal and to fill in gaps in discographies. I would consider buying for art purposes also, but not really for listening.

For an audiophile, yes. Functionally, no. But there are some times when certain pressings are very clearly of a higher/lower quality. For example, a CD version of an album is released, and the mixing on it was botched, and sounds awful.

But basically, just go with whatever format you like. If you personally can't hear the difference, and don't really care about having big cover art to fondle and admire, then it'd kinda be a waste to spring for a record player and vinyl.

I think this is the case with a few albums I own on CD. So having the vinyl there makes sense.

Sure, but it also works in reverse. Some vinyl records sound like garbage. For example, I have some early Judas Priest records that are shoddy as fuck. Not just the mixing, but the quality of the vinyl material itself is lackluster. Pretty much every digital version out there sounds better in comparison.

So make sure to do your homework, because vinyl is not always automatically better.

They sound worse and distort the music. They look cool though and turntablism is fun as hell.

On my system vinyl sounds way better than any digital format, but I think that's largely because I don't use a seperate DA converter - there have been well publicised tests where people couldn't tell the difference between vinyl and CD, however these were conducted on high end systems. If your DA conversion is being done on your computer or consumer grade CD player, I believe it's more likely that you will get a noticeably better sound from vinyl. As Ori pointed out it also depends on the album as many releases are mastered separately for vinyl.
