Worst book you've ever read

I hated that the Catcher in the Rye had basically no point other then Hey, I'm Holden Caulfield, relate to me. But it was really well-written and I didn't get exhasperated halfway through like I do with most "classic" novels.
For my birthday last year, my mom bought me the Twilight series. I read half of the first one and it was awful. Bella is seriously the blandest character in modern literature, you could not make a more blatant Mary Sue if you tried.

jackhammer 06-05-2009 07:18 PM

The Bible.

I love The Catcher In The Rye, it's one of my favorites of all time but I most definitely agree with you about Twilight. Maybe it's because I'm a teenage girl but most people expect me to love that series. Some girls called me heartless because I said it was cliché and terrible.

If you treat it as a fictional book, the Bible is actually pretty entertaining.

Oh and to answer the question: Twilight.

Ghostrider 06-05-2009 07:23 PM

Anything by Steinbeck, especially The Red Pony, has to be the worst novel I ever read.

I'm having to read Cannery Row for my English class.:banghead: I do not care for anything I have read by Steinbeck.

gunnels 06-05-2009 07:25 PM

I thought The Pearl was decent.

Ghostrider 06-05-2009 07:30 PM

The Pearl wasn't so bad, but I just don't like anything Steinbeck has written.

Also I agree with JH about the Bible,,,a work of fiction.

Bane of your existence 06-05-2009 07:32 PM

Something called Slatewiper. It was retarded.

Burning Down 06-05-2009 07:43 PM

"The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck. I have given it a few tries but I could never really get past that first sentence

Actually I've only ever gotten about a quarter of the way through before having to put it down. I found it really, really dry.

Really? I never read it, but it seemed like it would be a good book.

To be fair, I probably only hated it because it was shoved down my throat in english class. I've considered re-reading it to see if I was just being a stubborn, 13-year-old twat but I haven't been able to muster the courage.

SATCHMO 06-05-2009 08:22 PM

^^^^^^^Meh Why bother.

I hated Wicked. Well I didn't hate it, but I found it grossly overrated. To be fair the books I hate are usually the ones I give up on pretty early on.

Worst. Book. Ever!

God I hated it so much. I bought it under the pretense that it was written by a young author and it was his own critique on his generation, but no it's written by so old douche bag who pines for "the good ol' days". I lent it to my friend and after reading a few pages he asked me if it was OK for him to write in it, I said it was and a few months after I got it back almost every page had a counter-argument or totally destroyed whatever credibility the author had, reading his comments was far more entertaining then the book.

schadenfreude 06-06-2009 01:25 AM

Twilight.

I'm still reeling from the ***gotry.

Some people might disagree... but I hate Stephen King... he's so f###ed in the head!

boo boo 06-06-2009 04:05 AM

I like Stephen King, but his more recent horror stuff has been pretty lame.

Anyway. I dunno, probably The Voice of the Night by Dean Koontz.

adidasss 06-06-2009 04:24 AM

I thought Fahrenheit 451 was pretty bad overall. I also gave up on Iain Banks' Espedaire Street, probably the dullest thing I've read thus far.

I don't really read that much...:\

ElephantSack 06-06-2009 07:04 AM

A Walk to Remember

I'm not proud of it. It was part of English class.

Twilight: Yes, I'm a vampire. Yes, I'm much older than I look. Why am I at high school again?

Bulldog 06-06-2009 07:39 AM

Can't really remember a truly awful book that I've read. I guess I could say Stephen King's Dreamcatcher, but it had its good bits. Didn't suck anywhere near as hard as the movie either.

^^Yes. Wicked sucked perpetual balls. It seemed like it was a pretty steady pattern of something like this:
chapter completly made up of flowery writing
chapter completly made up of flowery writing
SEXXX
Repeat

I sort of have a history of getting books for my birthday...and they usually suck. One year, my Grandpa got me this advice book by Bill O'Reiley. It was so stupid it was redic.

I'm inclined to strongly disagree with you and ask if you're saying that because you've actually read it and thought it was terrible, or if you're saying that because of issues you have with religion in general (for which I wouldn't fault you in the slightest)? Just wondering...

Anywho, I can't say there is a book that I've read that I actually flat out hated. Usually if I'm not feeling it by the time I've read a decent portion of it, I put it down.

The Unfan 06-06-2009 12:21 PM

Atlas Shrugged is the worst book ever.

In all seriousness, the worst book I ever read is probably The Island by Peter Benchley (the dude who wrote Jaws). It's about a clan of modern day pirates who all live on some secret island in the Caribbean and are all descended from Blackbeard or some such bullshit. Anyway, it's as bad as it sounds.

I actually liked that book a lot when I was a kid. It's pretty hard for me to imagine someone having trouble understanding it.

Yeah, it's overlong, bloated, preachy, lacks coherent narration, lacks character depth, is full of gaping plot holes and the main protagonist doesn't even appear until the second half.

It does have a few badass action scenes here and there though, David & Goliath, Samson, Armageddon.

asshat 06-06-2009 03:56 PM

"closing time" joseph heller, the sequel to one of my favourite books-catch 22.

cheezyridr 06-08-2009 02:56 PM

Haha...I forgot about Catch 22. Can't say it's a bad book, I just didn't dig the supposed humour and got tired of waiting for something to actually happen...(after about 30 pages).

crazymenrunningback 06-08-2009 03:08 PM

Criss Cross
My ****ing god that sucked. It was about puberty and **** and absolutley nothing happened until the end when a dude and a girl had eye contact for a couple seconds. ,dsgmnk,bdhgl.jdfhlkg.sdjf that book sucked
