Medical Advice

Okay so I'm just not having the greatest time right now. I have the stomach flu. On top of that I got poison ivy. Anyone know any natural remedies for either?

FireInCairo 05-18-2009 07:20 AM

Stomach flu is hell.
Just try to drink water and sleep man, not much else you can do.
I had it earlier this year, I still can't eat pesto (last thing I ate before it hit me).
We dont have poison ivy here so i dont know sorry.

coryallen2 05-18-2009 07:23 AM

Damn you don't have poison ivy there? You are lucky. That stuff raises hell on my body. I've been sleeping and drinking ginger ale and 7 up. I can't hardly keep anything down. This has been going on for about 2 weeks. I'm starting to get afraid.

FireInCairo 05-18-2009 07:25 AM

Yeah that's no good.
Get to a doctor.

coryallen2 05-18-2009 07:27 AM

Yeah...

I need too. Can't keep anything down.

I'm trying to remember if I ate anything that would make me sick.

I think it might be these cabage rolls I ate. They did'nt seem to be cooked all the way through.

The Unfan 05-18-2009 07:58 AM

Being fake sick is cool. I've got those nasal herpes that have been going around.

coryallen2 05-18-2009 07:59 AM

LOL. No i'm not faking. I wish I was. I rather have nasal herpes than this stuff.

How can you get sick from poison ivy? Doesn't that just cause a rash?

If you throw up a lot, try and get some sugars and salts in you to make up for what your body loses. A common remedy for nausea here is just salty water with some sugar in it.

Be warned though that if your stomach flu is caused by bacteria, eating and drinking sweets like 7up and ginger ale may worsen your condition as it ups your blood sugar levels which basically means more food for the bacteria. Get some vitamin Cs and hot tea with lots of lemon instead.

coryallen2 05-18-2009 08:13 AM

^ Tore never said I got sick from the poison ivy. I said I got sick and on top of that I got poison ivy. And yeah poison ivy can make you sick if you ingest it.

FireInCairo 05-18-2009 04:34 PM

...but you would have to be mentally disabled to eat poison ivy.

Urban Hat€monger ? 05-18-2009 04:38 PM

I've not seen much evidence to the contrary

pourmeanother 05-18-2009 05:13 PM

Well you turned to the right place by asking MB... I actually have a PhD in medical excellence. In my professional medical opinion, I think you should make a burrito and put two tablespoons of curry on it, chase it down with some ipecac. That ought to do the trick.

Or, go see a real doctor.

In all honestly, smoke a bowl real quick. Mans greatest natural remedy, and the second greatest might me aloe vera, try that on your ivy.

``Yeah, it's a cure-all. My buddy Jonah broke his elbow one time. He just smoked some weed. It still clicks, but it's cool. ``

-Ben Stone (Knocked Up)

Sorry I just thought of that line after I read it.

Seriously it might actually calm down your stomach and the munchies will force you to eat, or at least to try and keep down some food.

sleepy jack 05-19-2009 01:32 AM

If you rub crisco (or some sort of shortening) over the poison ivy rash area lay out in the sun (or maybe under a very hot heater, or standing in front of an oven cooking at about 450 degrees if it's not sunny) it'll clear up after awhile of exposing the shortening to heat.

Guybrush 05-19-2009 01:48 AM

Urine might also help you with your rash. Just pee on yourself or if the rash is somewhere your pee can't reliably reach, just empty yourself in a container and then apply the pee with a paintbrush.

SATCHMO 05-19-2009 03:38 AM

Buy some ginger root, mince it, and steep it in a non-caffeinated herbal tea like Chamomille or mint. The ginger is anti viral and will abate the vomitting and diarreah if you have either of those. The chamomille and mint will both help relieve your nausea. Gatorade or pedialite are both good to replace the electrolytes your losing through dehydration.

Edit: Tore's right about the urine. It also works for athlete's foot.

coryallen2 05-19-2009 06:34 AM

I've been told that bleach will cure it up. With a bleach to water ratio of 1:5.

sleepy jack 05-19-2009 07:37 PM

Yeah you should definitely try that.

jackhammer 05-20-2009 08:02 AM

You had a bad stomach but drank crappy carbonated drinks? That stuff is bad enough when you are feeling fine but those sort of things are probably the worst thing to drink.

Really gentle on the stomach and replaces lost fluids. No caffeine either.

coryallen2 05-20-2009 08:07 AM

My stomach has been getting better lately. I found a tick on me yesterday. Is it the culprit?

Nope!

pourmeanother 05-20-2009 10:50 AM

In my professional medical opinion it sounds like you have lyme disease.

cheezyridr 05-20-2009 04:35 PM

i used to work for a tree service years ago. i got poison ivy alot. the quickest way to rid yourself of it is to rub the area with alchohol and dry it out.

Scarlett O'Hara 05-20-2009 06:27 PM

Cory if you ever get stomach flu again, eat apples and plain white bread, they are the only things you'll keep down. The fibre in the bread will reduce your other end issues too haha.
