Anyone read up on the history of Mother's Day? Read the intro then skip to Criticism.
This is why I have trouble taking it seriously.

I don't see anything wrong in reminding your mom how much you care for her and appreciate her. I bought my mom some books and chocolates.

Well I gave my Mum a phonecall in the end and I would have made her something if I wasn't a complete klutz when it comes to arts/crafts. But I made an effort to avoid fuelling the Mother's Day bonanza.

I was going to take her to dinner but it became a family thing so I ended up cooking for everyone.

I bought my mom flowers and a new bird feeder, and my brother took us all out to a sushi restaurant, then I spent the rest of the day lying in bed with a terrible headcold, she did her motherly duties and took care of me.

Haha I love how Mother's Day represented your mother looking after you. But it shows that's how much she cares. Bless her.

She sounds like a dope to me. Got her nose in some moral issue, didn't like the way it went in the hands of the unwashed masses. Blew her fortune on whining about it. Whatever.

Agreed. None of us may like it, but its happened with every other holiday as well. Comes with the territory of living in America, or any other developed country for that matter.

I don't know if it's commercialization as much as Mother's Day is slowly starting to fall into the same category that Valentine's Day and Earth Day fall into. That being the one day where you're suppose to do something you should do everyday. Now for me I live with my mom and stepdad again after 3 years of being on my own so I can go to school, so I'm extremely grateful for not having to pay rent, laundry, buy food etc. Not everyone has this same situation, but still I mean... a call every now and then won't kill you. The second Sunday of May shouldn't be the only day you tell your mom that you love them just like February 14th shouldn't be the ONLY day you tell your boyfriend or girlfriend or husband or wife that you love them and just like April 22nd shouldn't be the only day you care about the planet.
