I'd get all of my military paraphernalia in Spanish. I ended up not joining the military because all of their good points were in comprehendible.

There were two kids in my school with my last name, and he was ESL and his parents didn't speak English.

to this day I get the "you're Spanish?!?!?!?!" comment from dip****s who think we're all deep brown and dance to mariachi.

What does it mean when you say you're Spanish? Your parents are Spanish, you have a Spanish surname?

I've taken 3 semesters of French and I'm in my third of Spanish. I'd like to major in Spanish in College but right now I'm on the path of math =/

because people come to associate Spanish with Mexican and mestizo background. most intelligent people understand that Spanish is European in nature, not native Mexican.

i suppose the fact that most Spanish is spoken south of the border rather than across the pond can contribute to the misconception.

It's actually Castillian...Spain is a multinational, multilingual country...:D

lucifer_sam 05-13-2009 06:51 PM

their official language is Spanish.

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 05-13-2009 06:54 PM

i think spanish and castilian are the same thing...

lucifer_sam 05-13-2009 06:55 PM

well it's also a dialect which refers to that specific part of Spain.

swim 05-13-2009 07:00 PM

Castillian is the what latinos speak because castillians were the ones who invaded. You could say all the different dialects collectively make up spanish. But for all intents in purposes since castillian is most common it's what people mean when they say spanish.
