If you're on your own, then you did something wrong. Most likely, you've connected to the wrong server. Just write these two lines like you would if you were chatting to someone :
- /server irc.rizon.net
- /join #musicbanter
There's always someone on the channel. If not people (who may be inactive), then at least the bots Banter and Albert (at the moment). Banter is even able to have conversations (sort of), so you could have a chat with her. ;)
If AIM chatrooms are like MSN chatrooms, then we've actually struggled with those quite a lot before we got the IRC channel up. This is by far the easiest way to have a chatroom that could potentially have hundreds of visitors at once, no sweat. You don't have to manage every member who wants to join and it's always open and there are always people hanging there.
I know a lot of people are a bit reluctant to try new stuff and learn new things when they have an old way of doing it, but this is actually a very simple and good solution.
