That's probably good advice. It's not always the case though that a sci-fi tie-in novellisation is written by a hack. You ever read any Alan Dean Foster? He did the novellisation of Alien Nation, and he's a very prolifiic and successful author.
But yeah, in general, as I say, good advice.
