Yes it's accurate but I don't really care. 'Athlete' is generally applied to track and field competitors.

If someone says they follow athletics I assume they mean the Diamond League not the World Cup.

And I've never met anybody who follows track and field so they'd have to explicitly tell me that they follow track and field for me to get the idea that they follow track and field.

Nobody who follows football (soccer to you) here would say they followed athletics. They're seen as totally different, just the same as tennis, golf, darts etc would not be considered in any way athletics. It covers the likes of running, jumps, javelin, hammer, shot putt, pole vault and gymnastics.
