I actually feel really bad for these poor people. :(

As do I, the lady in the 2nd one looks to be in a great amount of pain and because of the close up on the shot, that look of pain is quite haunting. I think Rube explained it best on Dead Like Me "See a man get hit in the head with a bucket of wet cement from 50 feet away and it's hilarious, but see it again at 10 feet and suddenly it's not so funny. You see the pain in his eyes..." Or it went something along those lines.

I'm somewhat conflicted about it, on one hand I agree with you.

On the other hand, I'm evil. There's some things fat people just shouldn't do and when they're egotistical enough to do anyway, like trying to do a ballet dance when you're the size of a whale, well you kinda have it coming.

Stupidity at it's most absurd is something I find funny even when it's tragic.

I've seen several variations of that specific picture, although I can't be sure which one is the original.

It's photoshopped. You can tell because there is no variation (besides size) between the letters that occur more than once.

Because the font typing isn't completely obvious.

After a quick google search, I found one pretty old and crappy site that let's you change the text on that kid's cardboard piece. Used it to make this :
