had a chance to sample this last night when our beverage purveyor wanted to reward the kitchen for a banquet function we worked. she brought in 4 cases for us, and at 9.0% abv i can still safely say they got polished off by the end of the night. seriously delicious stuff right here.

bob. 09-22-2012 10:36 AM

^that looks amazing

must find!

With the ridiculous state of affairs regarding U.K taxation and beers dropping below the 5% mark it is good to find a good tasting lager @ 6% that is still cheap to buy and tastes decent. My local off license does a roaring trade with any Polish beer available at £1 per 500ml can.

bob. 09-22-2012 07:12 PM

how bad are the taxes there?

like Canada tax bad?

in the spirit of drinking with...eh low taxation :)

^That looks beautimous.

I love this thread now that we have so much micro / craft beer talk in here. Got lots of stuff to try out.

Forward To Death 09-23-2012 12:12 AM

Surly's "SurlyFest" and "Bitter Brewer" are some of the best I've ever had; Founders/New Glarus/Bells included, and highly recommended to anyone who's into craft beer/micros. Actually same goes for any Surly, but those are two I tried only last week.

Right now though, just Newcastle Brown Ale.

I'm in the UK right now and sampling some beers I can't get (easily) stateside. I've always enjoyed wheat beers but none as much as this here.

Mojo 09-23-2012 04:25 AM

Hoegarden is a good one. Have you tried Erdinger? As far as wheat beers go, you should be able to find that one rather easily.

Where abouts in the UK are you?

someonecompletelyrandom 09-23-2012 04:33 AM

I have not, I'll keep an eye out for it. The variety of beers here is astonishing. Stateside it's more of a hassle to find anything other than the big domestic brewers/imports.

I'm in central London, at the moment. Stone's throw from Kensington.

Mojo 09-23-2012 04:41 AM

Ah ok, so you have a good selection of pubs that will stock imports and ales. Well yeah, if you want to try some wheat beers then getting a hold of some Erdinger shouldn't be an issue. Keep an eye out for Vedett White, Schneider Weisse and Weihenstephaner. You can actually find a few American ones fairly easily now too.

You should be sampling some local beer dammit! Wheat beer is loved by the Germans but I can't stand it personally, sits far too heavy with me.

I hope the U.K weather is living up to it's usual eclectic standards for you ;)

They are back. The best Imperial IPA to ever grace the planet. Prepaid for two gonna pick those up and Bobs Tart of Darkness hopefully Wednesday if i get the time. Anybody who loves a hop wallop of flavor and distinct savory ingredients should check this beer out. Don't feel like driving there til Wednesday, so its Mongo Monday.

I've had a few bottles of Meantime Pilsner and I'm hooked. Tap wise I've stuck to Guinness as it's one of my favorites and tastes far better here than imported.

The weather has been lovely up until the last two days. Poor choice to visit the countryside, too. Froze my ass off.

Still lots of great beer to choose from. I like most of Smiths stuff. Smithwicks is another good irish ale if you see it give it a shot. I remember stumbling and bumbling home after about five pitchers one night from Ye Olde Ship Inn.

i have not had a Sam Smiths beer in years...their Welcome Winter is by far one of my all time winter beers

Winter Welcome is a great beer. "Blessing of your heart you brew good ale". Always loved that Shakespeare quote on the bottle.

Guinness really doesn't travel well. I've never had a Guinness in the US but I have no problem believing that it tastes a lot better here. It tastes so, so much better in Ireland than it does here too. I drink nothing but Guinness when I go to Dublin because it's beautiful.

You can find Sam Smiths stuff outside of Yorkshire. How easily I'm not sure but I know a couple of places that sell it so theres probably a few places in London.

It's shit in the United States. Really not even worth getting. I'll keep an eye our for those Sam Smith brews. Today I had a Meteor and a Wendelinus, which they only sold by the half pint for some reason. The Meteor was fantastic, really sweet, almost honey flavor. The Wendelinus actually packs a punch despite being nice and easy on the way down.

Not true!
I've drunk Guinness in England, N. Ireland, and (lots) in the US and I've loved every drop. If not for its painfully low ABV (you have to drink 4 pints to get half-drunk. Fun fact: Guinness-brewers keep its ABV low so that its taxation is less than higher ABV beers) it may just be the perfect tasting beer - even when shipped across an ocean
Age generally doesn't hurt beer, it usually helps. Tastes great, less filling.

edit: forgot to actually reply...

Stone Imperial Russian Stout... And once that runs dry in a minute, got Schell's Hopfenmalz in a 12-pack.

The stout is heavenly, btw.

If they only sell it by the half or three-quarter glass, then it must be fairly strong. It must be pushing the 7% mark.

Well, I haven't had it in the US. I have had it abroad though and in most places it was foul. Obviously there are a lot of factors, how the owner has stored it, poured it etc, but personally I find it to be much, much nicer in Ireland.

Wicked Weasel 10-01-2012 08:15 PM

It'll probably just be PBR on Thursday, though. I get paid Friday, and that will be the good stuff.
