Well it's lower calorie so you get roughly the same alcohol content without packing on pounds as much as other beer. But more importantly, I'd say, is that fact that because it's lighter it's easier to get drunk off of since you don't get that full feeling as quickly. Plus it's usually super cheap.

Never thought of it that way! Fair enough! Is it really easier to get drunk off? That seems so odd! The only people who drink light beer here are the ones who don't want to get drunk quickly! Haha, opposite. Plus it's not super cheap compared to regular beer here so I guess people aren't inclined to drink it. Plus there's a stack of 'trendy' low calorie full-strength beers floating around these days anyway.

But yeah, odd, I've never known anyone in my life who drinks light beer apart from my father when he doesn't want to get drunk but still enjoy a few brews with friends or whatever.

Light beer is... lighter. Less filling, less calories, less flavor... in other words, you can drink a shit ton of it without blinking.

So the point of it is getting drunk, not enjoying beer?

Absolutely not. Quite the opposite in fact.. well, for me and most of the people I know anyway.

Take this for instance: An outdoor day with friends, BBQ, maybe spend some time kicking the ball back and forth, hanging out and all that, going for a swim, etc.. You drink beer because you it's enjoyable and you get a nice enough buzz. The point isn't to get completely plastered, but you also don't want to get so full and thick from it you just want to lay down. Light beers let you drink them all day without that happening.
I wouldn't spend a day like that drinking Guinness. Nor would I spend a day like that drinking scotch.

Light beer just works better for scenarios like that.

To me, light beer is pisswater. Especially American light beer. But that's just my opinion.

I had a similar conversation with Urban about light beer a while ago and I'm wondering if you might be coming from same perspective that he was. Apparently in Europe, maybe in Australia too, light beer means that it has a lower alcohol content. This is not the case in the US. Here, light beer just means it has less calories. In some cases, if I remember correctly Bud Light versus Guinness is one example, American light beer actually has a higher percentage of alcohol than heavier beers. Couple that with the fact that you can drink more of it and, yeah, it's a lot easier to get drunk off of.

Ohhhhhhh... I totally understand now! Light beer here means lower alcohol content! Here I was thinking you lot were pussies and couldn't cop full-strength alcohol beer

Totally makes sense now.
