Chavs are mostly white from low income families. Education is of no importance to them neither is employment. If they do get a part time job its only to afford an old Fiesta they can do up or something. I think the crux of it is education (or lack thereof)

I can, with some effort, wrap my head around there being "white trash" in England, but the fact that it appears to be a carbon copy emulation of the "Italian American from New Jersey" stereotype is just too ****ing bizarre!

lucifer_sam 03-19-2009 08:27 PM

it's the same basic ideology. just a different set of circumstances.

I think the thing is in the US most of the white trash is rural or at least acts like it's rural. The only place where you find urban white trash equivalent to chavs in the US is in the densely packed northern cities. It's not so much that it's just the "Italian-American from New Jersey" group—there are equivalent groups of mostly Irish-Americans in Boston or mostly Polish-Americans in Chicago for example—it's just that New Jersey guidos are the most well-known group that fit the profile.

not necessarily. i think anything that falls as the stereotypical "frat guy" echoes the same sentiment. and if you're going by a per capita basis then college towns (most notably party schools) have a disproportionate number of these people. and it's not like they come from urban areas either, most are middle class suburbanites.

americans just have a different definition of "white trash". imo they're all trash.

They should do a chav 'New Haircut".

I disagree. I think a key thing about chavs is that they're not the type of people who go to college so in that sense a frat guy is almost the antithesis of a chav. Chavs are more like the kind of people who grow up in south Philly, drop out of high school and never leave their little neighborhood.

that might be a better demographic fit but from my understanding they're still fairly similar. those guys (and i want to stop using the phrase "frat guys" because i know it extends beyond the fraternity) might have the benefit of a better education and a higher income, but i still think they have the same set of unifying principles.

i see your point, but if you approach it in that manner then i don't think there's nearly as wide a demographic that fits this stereotype you're creating. at least not in the america i know.

It's not a very wide demographic in the US, that's part of what I'm saying. The difference between the way the US and the UK are set up has created different social situations and different groups of people. Pretty much the only places that you can find American equivalents of chavs are the parts of the US that most closely resemble the UK: the northeast and to a lesser extent the rustbelt.
