Well I'm FaSho, originally ImGettinThatFaSho, which is a referance to the movie Superbad. My real name is Dustin, I joined almost two years ago when I was only twelve because I was bored and thought I knew a lot about music.
now i'm almost 15, and just finished my freshman year in high school. I run cross country and track for school, and am learning to play the guitar.

Alright so you say "I thought I knew a lot about music", suggesting maybe you didn't. Was there growth after coming to Musicbanter? And where were you then and where are you now?

When I joined, I was listening to mostly just Green Day, and artists like that. As I spent more time on MB I learned so much about music, and I would say the forum shaped my music taste as it is today. Now I would say my favorite band is The Smiths, but most of the music I listen to is folk/singer-songwriter type stuff. I also like a lot of hip-hop music, and of course Radiohead.

The main diffeeance between now and then, is that now I'm willing to listen to music out of my comfort zone, which is something I would not have done two years ago.

Ha, to come from just Green Day and (i assume) pop puk thats a pretty big fanning out. Were there interests in those bands/genres and you just didn't have good access or is this something that was a complete 180?

A complete 180. Pre-MB I had no interest in music that wasn't 'safe'. I didn't want to find new music because I thought what I listened to was the best around.

I see. Was there a tuipping point then? Was there a first act/song/effort where you said "ok I guess I'll give this a shot"?
Or did you just get a whole mess of things one day and let them run through?

I guess if I had to credit it to one artist, it would be Elliott Smith. After I found out there was an artist so vastly different from what I had been listening to that I really liked, I just started grabbing everything people were talking about on MB, to see if I would like it as well.

And how did you find him? Was this an Ethan propaganda piece or did you just want to see what the buzz was about?

When I was fairly new to the forum, Ethan shot down 80% of what I posted. So I thought "Maybe if I listen to music he likes, he'll like me" (looking back, this sounds really dumb, but I'm glad I had this thought because it was the first step I made towards finding new msuic) So I got Elliott Smith's self-titled, and was pleasantley surprised by how great it was.

ha, thats not such a bad plan. Especialyl dealing with such a...vociferous guy. So now that you're off and running musically, what would you say rates highest on your radar right now? Are you discovering anything that still makes you think "yeah, this is why I love music."

Band of Horses' new album 'Infinite Arms' has been getting a lot of plays from me recently. The album is by one of my favorite bands which, in my opinion, have gotten better every album. Also, it's a reassurance that good music is still being made, considering it's the only release of 2010 so far that I've really gotten into.

Were there releases in 2010 that you were excited for that didn't live up to the hype, or is this just a low year for what you're looking into musically?

Mostly the second. There were a couple albums though that I was hoping would be a lot better. The biggest example is Plastic Beach, which I do like a lot, but I was excpecting so much more.

Can you say what was lacking on Plastic Beach? Is this a case of a band just reproducing their last album or did they just fail to reach for it in your estimation?

Well, Demon Days is one of my favorite albums of all time, so maybe I was excpecting too much from it, but Plastic Beach was a dissapointment because a lot of the tracks seemed to be overdone re-hashings of songs from Demon Days. An example of this the track 'Broken", which takes a lot of elements fro the song 'El Manana', but doesn't do it justice at all.

I wanted to ask about your interest in Hip Hop because up until Gorillaz, it seemed everything was on the rock side. Was the interest in Hip Hop wholly unwarrented or was there something that lead you into checking it out.

Before I had branched out musically, I listened to a lot of the bands on Fall Out Boy's record label, Fueled By Ramen. One of those bands, who I still like today, was Gym Class Heroes. they infuse hip-hop beats with the more pop-rockish music of other bands on that label. I really liked the sound, but didn't want to try anything like it because I hated most of the hip-hop I'd heard on the radio. When I began to try new things, I decided I should get some rap albums. So i started of with, as you could probably guess, Life After Death by Notorius B.I.G. and All Eyez on Me by 2Pac. I loved both, especially the Biggie album, so I decided I'd see what people on MB were into and get that. Eventually, I downloaded Enter The Wu-Tang and Madvillainy, and realized that hip-hop is a genre full of amazing music.

And I think theres a widening disparity between whats on Hip Hop radio, which is mostly club friendly beat-rap and whats going on in the streets and whats downloaded on iPods. Is there rap you haven't checked out yet you've either heard good things about, or for one reason or another were interested in?

Other then Liquid Swords, I have virtually none of the solo albums by members of Wu-Tang Clan. mostly because there's so much of it, that I don't know what to get.

In America you'll hear people often say of music "I like everything except rap" or "I like everything except country." You've told us where you stand with the former, but do you like Country? Is there another genre you just don't like the vibe of?

Both of the comments really anger me because the reaosn most people say that is because they've only listened to what's on the radio i.e. Ludacris and Garth Brooks. When it comes to country, I really like Old Crow Medicine Show and The Avett Brothers the most.

OCMS have a very "front porch" element to them, (from what I've heard anyway) nothing too slicked up. Would you say thats a preference or do you enjoy, say, Tim McGraw also?

I definatley can listen to and enjoy music like tim McGraw, but I much prefer OCMS' style.

Reggae and Jazz are definatley the genre I own the least amount of music from, and know the least about, but I wouldn't say I dislike them.

What made you want to pick it up, and what are you playing these days?

Well I already know how to play a couple instruments (Viola, Bass), and I had always had an intrest in playing guitar because it just seemed like a lot of fun. So far I've been having a lot more fun with it then the bass.

Viola huh? How did you end up on that one, and how is finding sheet music for something that lives alone in its clef?

Well when I was in 5th grade I had the oppourtunity to join my school's orchestra progam. Everyone was playing the violin, and the cello seemed like a hassle. So I decided I'd pick something I'd never even heard of before. Now I'm in my highschool's orchestra, so I do most of my practicing at school.

So how about the Guitar, are you approaching anything thats difficult right now, or are just just jamming?

Well I've only been playing for a week or so, but I've been practicing alot. Right now I'm working some very, very easy songs. Blowing In The Wind by Bob Dylan, and The Scientist by Coldplay are what I've spent most of my time on.

This is a pretty cool thread. Nice first post resurrection interview there. You seem to be very open to music for someone so young, Fasho. I got into this before, but really the only music I can't listen to is country. I am so open to absolutely everything else (I listen to Bhangra...how many people do you know who listen to Bhangra?) but country just does not do it for me at all. Although I will admit that Avett Brothers are ok.
