it's been part of pop music for pretty much ever. just look in the credits for most pop acts and you'll usually see 2 or 3 names following the main entertainer's.
not exactly sure how you get to be in that position but it definitely exists. i'd just contact labels for more information about selling lyrics / working as a lyricist. having an arts degree (major in english literature / minor in music theory for example) wouldn't hurt either.
i also would NOT send a sample of your work unless they ask for it. it's a common practice to turn down unsolicited material in creative / entertainment fields for legal protection on both sides.
