Hot Topic, leave my goodz stuffz alonez

I was in Hot Topic with my girlfriend last week. Amongst the shirts reading "I <3 I <3 T-shirts" and "I do all my own stunts" and all of the other "cool saying t-shirts" I saw an actual GOOD shirt. It simply said "The Smiths."

Hey Hot Topic, you have Bullet For My Valentine and Fall Out Boy, don't you EVER f*ckin touch our real music.

Dr_Rez 09-09-2008 11:53 PM

Yea they really hit trends at the height of there popularity.

[MERIT] 09-09-2008 11:56 PM

I think you're missing my point. Hot Topic needs to stick to their sh*tty nu-metal abstractions. I don't want a poser-goth-scene-kid wearing a "The Smiths" t-shirt. Thats a slap in the face to Morrissey.

Farfisa 09-10-2008 04:10 AM

You know what's worse then that? Ghetto kids wearing a Smiths t-shirt because everyone else does. So that's more of a kick in the face to Morrissey.

Tomorrow 09-10-2008 11:32 AM

Are you really 21? This is an argument I would expect from someone still in high school who still gives a sh!t about image, or maybe an UP THA PUNX kind of character that looks down upon corporate agendas and doesn't bathe.

I suggest maybe directing all that misguided hate towards poverty or global warming - then come back to us and make a good thread about planting trees.

Urban Hat€monger ? 09-10-2008 11:35 AM

Chain store in selling something popular shocker !!!!!!!!

NSW 09-10-2008 12:19 PM

Who cares? If I saw a t-shirt at Hot Topic and liked it, I would buy it without fear of looking like a poser for buying something there. Yes, most of the people who shop there are angst-ridden kids trying to get attention from their parents by buying a bloody-skull t-shirt or some dumb **** like that, but really it's just a store like any other dumb nationwide retail store selling popular crap that people like. And if a "poser-goth-scene-kid" wants to wear a damn Smiths T-shirt, more power to him/her. Do you really think Morrisey cares? Probably not.

I don't care who you are and how old you are, everyone in varying degrees gives a sh*t about there image. If you don't, then thats ****ed up.

@nonsubmissivewife: 100% right.

U wanna see my ID?

What I was trying to get at (in my not-so-sober mindstate), was that why would Hot Topic even carry a t-shirt featuring The Smiths? Its doesnt seem to fit their xxh4rdc0rexx style. I don't want sh*t heads wearing shirts of good bands that I like and risk being associated with said sh*t heads.

adidasss 09-10-2008 01:30 PM

What is Hot Topic? http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...bigsadeyes.gif  :|

Yes, naturally everyone cares about their OWN image (not sure why it would be "f*cked up" if someone didn't though) - it's worrying about other people's fashion choices that is ridiculous and unnecessary.

this guy is single-handedly responsible for the commercialization of your favorite bands, childhood television shows, and quirky indie movies. his other favorite shirts include such witty sayings as... "i saw your mom on myspace," "the voices in my head are telling you to shut up," and "can't sleep... the clowns will eat me!"
he can't commit to single trend (no permanent hairdye or real tattoos) because it all changes so quickly. despite his willingness to follow whatever trend his favorite store features that week, his shirts always seem a year or two behind the times.

you know your favorite band is no longer part of the underground once this kid starts hawking their merch

They are not losers. They are just individuals.

HAHA no...

What makes me sad is the people who truly dress like that because it IS who they are. They get labeled wrongly.

@Tommorow: I use the phrase "****ed up" because in my opinion you should care that people perceive you as a good person, and you should perceive yourself as a good and honest person. Im not talking cool, trendy, funny, or any of that. Just from a moral standpoint.

My mistake though, i didnt make myself clear.

Piss Me Off 09-10-2008 03:02 PM

It's not that surprising is it? Fall Out Boy are for angsty losers and The Smiths are for angsty losers.

Dr_Rez 09-10-2008 03:04 PM

Haha i love your avatar. If one day you ever would like to change it and donate it to another member (preferably me) that would be great.

I think its Big Willie Style time now. Im about due.

sweet_nothing 09-10-2008 03:05 PM

Luke, are you serious or joking?

Piss Me Off 09-10-2008 03:06 PM

Serious man, the difference is that The Smiths were good.

Rezz: Haha i found it pretty hard to let go of my Meg White one, i doubt this is going anywhere for a while!

sweet_nothing 09-10-2008 03:19 PM

Cmon Marr has always been cool
http://www.gibson.com/Files/AllAcces...JohnnyMarr.jpg

Piss Me Off 09-10-2008 03:23 PM

Of course! (until the whole Cribs thing)
I'm not entirely sure what your point is though.

Fact: That pic was taken in Norwich!

sweet_nothing 09-10-2008 03:37 PM

My point is Marr isn't loser and he never was.

Piss Me Off 09-10-2008 03:46 PM

There are fewer cooler cats, that's for sure.

sweet_nothing 09-10-2008 03:52 PM

Mos def, I think he teaches a guitar masters guitar class in college nowadays.

Alfred 09-10-2008 03:52 PM

They sell some band merch for a few bands that I listen to, but they're still a sh!t store.

They're such a joke that I refuse to shop there, and not for any "punk rock" or "anti corporate" reasons either. I just hate the store, and I hate the fashion associated with it.

We don't have them here in Canada, from what I've seen, though. I'll shop at D-TOX for my band tees.

Dr_Rez 09-10-2008 03:54 PM

Who is the owner of Hot Topic? Or are they there own entity.

Eh?

sweet_nothing 09-10-2008 04:07 PM

Johnny Marr teaches a masters guitar class somewhere, I forgot where though.

NVM it was this

"During this period, Marr was asked to deliver a series of workshops and masterclasses to students at the University of Salford in the BA (Hons) Popular Music and Recording programme."

The Gap owns Hot Topic from what I've heard...

The Unfan 09-11-2008 06:20 AM

Hot Topic is owned by Hollister who is owned by Abercrombie & Fitch. Gap is owned by Gap Incorporated.

sweet_nothing 09-11-2008 07:55 AM

 the irony, I can't wait to tell the mallcore kids.

Sgt Pepper 09-11-2008 04:25 PM

So you would rather The Smiths not advertize? What about the kids that wear those shirts and other people who wanna learn about them and find that they really like and connect with the band? It's just a shirt in a store, not that big of a deal. The Smiths had to give permission to Hot Topic to sell the **** in the first place, so they wanted it there. So if they don't care, why do others?

sleepy jack 09-11-2008 04:26 PM

Seeing as the Smiths broke up over 20 years ago I don't think advertising is really a priority.

Urban Hat€monger ? 09-11-2008 04:27 PM

If being in Hot Topic is such a cultural faux pas then how come so many people know whats being sold in it?

Something like this

Me: hey that's a cool Smith's shirt, where did you get it?
Poser: Hot Topic
Me: ohhhhh...........so what's your favorite song?
Poser: Ohhh ummm I like them all.

The Unfan 09-11-2008 04:41 PM

Liking every Smiths song is an acceptable answer.

sleepy jack 09-11-2008 04:43 PM

As a Smiths fan I've just let it go and been quiet about liking them to avoid being associated with that goth crowd. Once Pete Wentz is writing books and naming them after Smiths songs you may as well give up being protective about them.

I don't think not being able to name a band member or album is.

Alfred 09-11-2008 05:20 PM

They'll take an Atreyu shirt any day.

lucifer_sam 09-11-2008 05:23 PM

You people are overreacting about this WAY too much. You'll find Beatles t-shirts everywhere. Is that reason enough to pigeonhole them in the nearest counterculture movement you run across? No, methinks.

The point is that if a Smiths t-shirt is found inside a mall shop (even one so debased as Hot Topic), it just means that they've embraced merchandising their image to willing consumers. Whoop-dee-fucking-doo. You people need to grow a sense of cynicism, otherwise you're gonna find yourself outraged at more shit than need be.

sleepy jack 09-11-2008 05:25 PM

Once again they broke up twenty years ago. Saying they've sold out is ridiculous.

lucifer_sam 09-11-2008 08:09 PM

I didn't say they sold out. It's kind of hard to sell out when your genre is best described as "jangle pop". I'm just saying that people need to loosen up a bit and stop acting like Morrissey sold his soul to the devil.
