Copyright law could result in police state: critics
What is this country coming to? Let's all revolt. I think I'll move to the states. Thank God for my dual citizenship. |

i'm canadian too and i think a lot of people are freaking out a little too soon. the bill was introduced thursday - 3 days ago - for its first reading. the canadian parliament isn't exactly speedy and being that this is a contentious issue it WILL draw attention and ire from detractors.
keep in mind that federal critics almost ALWAYS over exaggerate their position in order to draw more media attention to further their personal political ends. especially with a minority government that isn't exactly riding high in popularity polls. i'll most definitely be keeping an eye on bill C-61 but i'm not really worried yet. i can't see it passing through parliament as its currently written - which is also reflected in that article. it's only a matter of time before digital media usage is legislated but to consider the birth of a 'police state' is sensationalizing the issue quite a bit. if you're really concerned about it write a letter to your local MP over the summer and send it to scott brison and michaelle jean at the same time. i actually think the conservatives chose a good time to introduce the bill. it'll allow people to think it over during the summer and contact their representatives to better prepare them to debate and amend the bill prior to its 2nd and 3rd readings. now if the anti-circumvention clause is still in the bill on the 3rd reading then there might be a good reason to visit parliament hill. as it stands right now it's just a bad idea on the part of the ministry of industry of canada. |

it's not like there's much difference between either side on the federal level. at least with the conservatives you have a pretty good idea from the get go in what direction they're going to be moving in. with the liberals it always seemed to be about popularity and personal gain, not necessarily in that order, and neither of which are stable.
i'd really like to see the cooperation i've been reading about in quebec's minority lead government on the federal level but i figure i have a better chance of growing wings. |

I'm not really on either side. Socially, I tend to be conservative, but on other issues, I tend to be liberal. On other things, I think both parties are screwed.
Out of the things you described, I prefer the liberal way. Yeah, you know what the conservatives are doing: looking out for the rich. |

i'm pretty much the same. i started defining myself as a small c conservative during the last election. i was really hoping the minority government would spark real cooperation from both main political ideologies (like in quebec) unfortunately that hasn't come to pass.
