Since all the other Canadians are slacking...
Deal to keep Hockey Night theme song falls through
IS NOTHING SACRED ANYMORE!!! fucking CBC, fucking royalty disputes, fucking money hungry bastards killed hockey night in canada. May as well get rid of the fucking national anthem while they're at it. FUCK Copyright Music & Visuals. The highest liscencing fee in canadian television isn't fucking good enough? FUCK YOU Ciccone. Six figure buyout not an adequate compensation? That song may as well be the fucking national anthem for the amount of kids that grew up on that. how many fucking times have kids in canada sung that song while playing street hockey or in backyard rinks? fuck you and your greedy, soulless corporation. What the fuck will that song be good for when it's no longer played on hockey night in canada? it's worth absolutely jack shit if it's not associated with hockey night in canada. fuck Ciccone, fuck coyright music & visuals and most of all FUCK CBC for screwing this all up. Now CTV has bought the rights to the song, and will have to remaster it. same tune, entirely different arrangement. nice of CTV to capitalize on the fuck-ups of CBC, but it's not the same. hockey night in canada, fucking senile old don cherry with his disgusting suits even, and the hockey theme above all else, THAT'S canadian hockey. not whatever CTV throws out there with this patched up bull shit. /rant

you do know hockey night in canada was in negotiations to change networks a while back right? (2 seasons ago if i remember right). while the CBC is good at is screwing up, the CRTC content laws (while well intended) don't always work to the benefit of the broadcaster.
while it sucks that the tune is leaving the CBC at least it's going to another canadian broadcaster as opposed to ESPN. it's also not like the song hasn't been reworked and re-arranged over the past 40 years too. it's not like TSN doesn't know what they're doing when it comes to sports broadcasting either, couple that with the 6 year extension they signed last week with the NHL that gives them even more canadian team coverage. nothing lasts forever. you can either whine about it or move on. effing swearing your effing head off only makes it seem like you're overcompensating for the fact that you didn't care until it was too late. canadian hockey has nothing to do with broadcasting. it has nothing to do with a loud mouth in a suit and like it or not, it has nothing to do with a big band jazz ditty. it's always been about sportsmanship, hard work, and camaraderie. THAT is what don cherry focused on for every coach's corner broadcast. he'd always try to find someone who embodied that behavior to showcase them on his segment. or conversely he'd find someone who went against those ideals and would publicly call them out, calling them cheap bums and goons. and that's what the public was drawn to, he didn't kiss anyone's butt, he called it like he saw it and always maintained a clear view of what constituted good hockey - being a good sport. |

I can sympathise.
When ITV beat BBC for the rights to the Premier League a few years ago we lost the Match of the Day theme for ****ing U2. Luckily they only had the licence for 2 years before the BBC got it back again.

it's like focusing on the decoration on top of the frosting on the cake. yes it's significant but when it's all said and done, people want the cake. it may well go down as one of the biggest blunders in CBC sports history, like the time they fired ron maclean for a summer, but it's hardly the end of hockey. |

In a way it does (as I mentioned I am ignorant on this topic so bear with me). Of course it will still be nostalgic but only to dudes like you because you know that stuff. That's why it pisses off your average Canadian period because it's like everybody's inside joke (the hockey song, cherry, hockey night and all that) and they are like changing the joke so that only dudes like you will get it (but I see your point of course that song will always be remembered). hahah sorry if that doesn't make much sense at all but it's the best way I can explain it.
