Ever since Ronald Reagan took office, our economic politics have been reverting back to a more capitalist, even laissez faire capitalist state. The result has been a decaying middle class. Of course, we still have plenty of people making $50,000 - $100,000, but the cultural dynamics that go along with extreme capitalism is extreme consumerism. So, the major corporations, which also control the media, have driven us to material excesses, even threatening to make us feel inadequate if we didn't own certain products.
The solution to this would be to revert back to a more balanced mix of capitalism and socialism, that we enjoyed from the administrations of FDR up to Jimmy Carter. Most people think that our economy was suffering badly under Carter, however Reagan only managed to boost it through bilking funds out of retiree's social security funds, in order to cook the books. The prospect that makes this so threatening is the fact that even so called 'liberals' are usually in the pockets of big corporations just as much as Republicans. Even Clinton continued Reagan's policy of fabricating economic numbers, and bilking social security. I can't help but feel betrayed by all politicians, because they have seen this economic shift taking place over the last 3 decades, and no one seems to care. We are to believe that the Republicans keep us safe, and Democrats look out for our interests, however the only difference I see in the 2 parties is a difference in advertising. Republicans-anti abortion, Democrats-pro choice, Republicans-reformed health care, Democrats-universal health care. They take different positions, but the reason you see politicians flip flop so much is merely to climatize themselves to fit the needs of ever changing public opinion. They just want power. They just want to get in office, and keep in the pockets of the big corporations. If the Democrats were any different than the Republicans, then they would have voted down spending for the war when they took the House and the Senate in '06, and brought our troops home. Thomas Jefferson, one of the founding fathers, believed that Reformation to the Constitution was necessary, even possibly implenting a total upheaval of policies every 25 years or so. I've recently heard many people talking about a revolution needing to take place. Clearly, this is along the same lines with Reformation, however with Reformation, our faith put in the hands of those who implement policies and run the country. However, if they continue to fail us, a revolution might be the only way. Thoughts? Last edited by Miltamec Soundsquinaez; 05-20-2008 at 10:08 PM. |
