Blame Canada! (The official Canada thread, yes that's right, official!)

http://www.safecomputersolutions.com...lag%5B1%5D.gif

Do Canadians really have an inferiority complex towards the Yanks? Why does everyone hate Toronto? Is Quebec ever gonna be an independent country? How would you "pitch" Canada to someone? What are the benefits and the shortcoming of being from Canookistan? What are your favorite Canadian films and/or bands?

Discuss Canada (eh?)!

sweet_nothing 05-11-2008 03:30 PM

WTF are you going on about?

adidasss 05-11-2008 03:31 PM

About Canada. It's a country...somewhere north of where you are...

No **** Sherlock, what are we supposed to do? Hate on Canada? Discuss Canadian music?

simplephysics 05-11-2008 03:37 PM

They put mapel syrup on my ham in Quebec. :/

Alfred 05-11-2008 03:37 PM

Canadians, do, in fact have an inferiority complex to the States. I, being one myself should know. It's the reason Canadian chains like Zellars and Rona put "proudly Canadian" underneath their names. It's the reason Canadians here talk negatively about Americans for no apparent reason.

yes

toronto gets hated on due to most native ontarians having a superiority complex over the rest of the country.

quebec will never be its own country. if canada falls quebec will fall with it whether the separatists like it or not.

you pitch canada to others by working the 'nice' stereotype.

benefits - free healthcare
shortcomings - free healthcare

can't think of a great canadian film off the top of my head

favourite band - toss up between SIANspheric and the gandharvas.

HA HA

québec could very well become its own country... in the 1995 referendum it was 50.58% no to 49.42% yes, ridiculously close

the seperatist movement isn't as strong now but its still there

Im Canadian. I love Canada and everything about it. Hockey, Beer, and Maple Syrup. This is my regular weekend. I'll use this weekend as an example. Friday night, went to the grocery store with a bunch of friends and bought 200 dollars worth of meat and sauces/marinades for a BBQ we were having. People came over, we partied, I shotgunned my 12 case of Lucky. Saturday I went to my friend's Lacrosse game and then to work. After work I phoned a friend to buy me a 12 case and then headed to a bud's for a party. Got shitty. This morning, woke up and went woodcutting with a couple friends for some extra money. Thats been my weekend, I thought I'd post about it because its sorta the perception of Canadians to some people. Beer, Hockey(Not locally in season anymore so its Lacrosse for me) and lumberjackin hah.

But yea, some famous Canadian bands..Protest The Hero, Rush, Neil Young, The Guess Who, and Devin Townsend are probably my favourite, even though I dont listen to them often...Im not huge on Canadian bands I guess. Alexisonfire is another one. Actors, Jim Carrey, Seth Rogan, Pamela Anderson, Dan Akroyd. Seth Rogan is who im most proud to share origin with. He's the up and coming comedian of the next decade I bet.

I won't hear a bad word said against Canada.
Canada volunteered to fight alongside Britain only a week after we declared war on Germany.

Alfred 05-11-2008 04:09 PM

It doesn't make a difference, really.

sweet_nothing 05-11-2008 04:09 PM

I like Canada. And Canadians I mean most of the coolest people on this site are from Canada or up north, such as Ethan, Lizzie, Coming up roses.....ect.

Alfred 05-11-2008 04:10 PM

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-Canada, I just think a good number of Canadians have the inferiority complex.

jibber 05-11-2008 08:31 PM

Inferiority complex?

I honestly don't believe that most canadians do have an inferiority complex. We simply resent being contstantly measured against the united states. Our history is vastly different and the ways in which our country is governed is very different as well. A lot of people looking in from the outside (meaning outside north america) see canada as simply a less populated version of the states. The only canadians i've ever met who I could say have an inferiority complex are VERY conservative people who wish they lived in the US.

Good things about being Canadian?

Free health care, as mentioned. No one with my history of hospital visits could deny that we've got problems, HUGE problems with our health care system. However, I do believe that we will eventually find a way to iron these out (and for alberta at least, FINALLY getting rid of klein was a big first step), and I'd much rather live in a country that believes strongly in providing a safety net for those who would otherwise be unable to afford health care. Yeah we pay higher tax dollars, but call me a socialist, hell call me a dirty pinko commi but I would rather be unable to afford a porsche with my hard earned money than see our country turn into the united states. Having said that, I think we do need a two teir health plan. Hopefully one good thing that the conservatives will do while in power (this coming from someone who has always voted liberal) will be to take the steps neccesary to make this happen.

another good thing about living in canada, the space! my god the space!! I'm extremely proud to say that in canada, you can still go places where you are TRULY in the middle of nowhere. no cities, no roads, hell not even any dirt paths will interupt the wilderness in some areas of the country. I love that people dont look at you funny if you smile at a stranger. I love that anywhere I travel in the world, people will smile and say "OH CANADA!! WONDERFUL!" (or something to that extent) when I say where I'm from.

what don't i like about canada? I dont like that for the past 14 years my home province was ruled by an alcoholic hick. I don't like that Canada has one of the worst (or perhaps even the worst) record for greenhouse gas emmisions in the world. I don't like that we're letting our health care system go down the ****ter because the government refuses to pay competive wages for doctors and nurses and refuses to look towards new solutions for a system that hasnt been working for decades (read: two teir system). but, despite it all, I can't say that there's a single country I would rather call home. Maybe NZ, but i'm far too much of a canadian now to turn into a kiwi.

good movies and music have already been mentioned, but how the f*ck has everyone forgotten Fubar!?
