On the recent Trolls on the Metal Archives...
Hi all. My handle is Nyaricus and I want to start up a discussion with you fine folk here on Music Banter. I'm from the Metal Archives, which is where some of your users recently trolled. I am not a troll and this is not a troll posting, to clear that out of the way.
I'm likely in the minority when I will openly admit over on that forum that I like nu metal. Even further in that minority am I when I will argue that nu metal is most definitely a sub-genre of heavy metal, and not of hard rock (a majority over there claim that nu metal has nothing to do with metal in the first place, albeit a name and sound which point the other way, rap-rock bands being labelled as nu metal aside....). So, it's kinda been an uphill battle for me, in that regards. However, aside from that, that forum is a great place to go. If you love "troo" metal (oh Manowar...), there is not another place which can compare to it! The people there are highly, nay, extremely knowledgeable in regards to a plethora of metal-related subjects. I love how I can ask a question and receive not just any answer, but a highly detailed answer about what I was asking about. That forum is great for that. Besides that, there are some awesome people that post there. I'm not going to get into specific users here (good or bad) but some people are a BLAST! I'm active in a few different forums, and if you ignore the majority of jerks there on MA, you can have a great time. I enjoy being on that forum most days. I suppose my main complaint there would be the style of moderation. It's very inconsistent, and is overly strict. It comes down as being ruthlessly harsh on newbies to the site or to "troo" metal, and doesn't really give those types of people a fair chance. Combined with other users who generally threadcrap newbie threads before they are quickly locked (and said established members never getting any sot of reprimand for being ****tards in these threads) the environment over at MA can appear to be overly hostile, inflammatory and generally uncomfortable. However, if you have even been there, the mods and general posters expect two things from you: show some intelligence, and have a shell as hard as mithril :P: Jokes aside, that's basically what you have to have to "survive" over there. While I don't particularly think I am a savant with a mental sheath of iron (but damn can they get under my skin some nights lol....) I try my best and put up with the rest. Doesn't always work, but I'm sure there are jerks on here just the same as anywhere else in real life, or in cyberspace. I guess my point here is mainly to say that, yes, the Metal Archives has plenty of nice people on there and, no, we didn't deserve certain posters from here ***ting all over our boards. I'm sure for most of these miscreants it was all fun and games - and hell, no one got hurt, right? But really, it doesn't back up your case against us that we are "uptight jerks" over on MA any better than posters over there now have the perception that people over here on MB are a bunch of immature ****tards, right? Look, people are entitled to their own opinions, and that's why I came here: to not persuade you to come over to MA and have a jolly good time, but rather to simply be open to other people who you don't give a chance. As a university student who's endlessly interested in history, cultures, sociology and anthropology, that sort of attitude, of being completely distrustful of strangers and "those folk over there" has lead to many a problem in the real world. People not giving those unknown to them a fair chance has started all sorts of conflicts from the very minor to large-scale wars. Ignorance, especially on purpose in such an enlightened age as which we live in, is almost inexcusable. When mankind stops worrying about, and warring with, "those people over there" we will have only improved upon the very fabric from which all humanity is spun from. In any case, those are just my two coppers. Discuss, lock or delete as necessary. cheers, --N |
