This is true, however, here's the way I look at it:

The toilet is used for pee, poop, and less frequently (in my experience) vomit. Vomiting isn't really dependent on the seat being up or down; if someone has the foresight to realize they're about to vomit, they may try to get the seat up, but it's really a matter of convenience and the time that can be expended prior to vomit. Therefore, I'm only going to count the use of the toilet for peeing and pooping.

Women:
Peeing: Seat down.
Pooping: Seat down.

Men:
Peeing: Seat up.
Pooping: Seat down.

So, out of the four most common toilet related scenarios, the seat is required down 75% of the time. As such, and for convenience, the seat should, by all logic, be left down.

I have an alternative: lid down all the time. Stops pets from playing with the water, prevents things from falling into the toilet and is equally inconvenient for men and women.

I can see that logic but I still dont agree with it. If the toilet seat is up and I need to put it down to have a **** then thats what I do. It takes a second at most.

So if i dont mind that then that evens the odds up and the girl can just deal with it and shut up.

I've been in peoples houses where the wife/girlfriend has had a go at the guy for leaving the seat up and it makes me grind my teeth it's so unimportant.

I actually do just leave the lid down completely for that reason. I have a cat who thinks that drinking out of the toilet is the best thing ever.

I don't ask that everyone in my household do the same, but that's generally how I do things.

The thing that actually irks me about my housemates in relation to the bathroom is this:

Our bathroom door, if the door stop is not put in front of it, will close on its own behind whoever leaves the bathroom. It also has no lock. I always put the doorstop back in place so that people know the bathroom is available.

My housemates, however, rarely do the same. This means that whenever I need to use the bathroom, I always have to knock and wait for a response. There have been instances where they've been in the bathroom listening to their ipods (on the toilet, for God knows what reason) and not heard me, and I've walked in on them in the bathroom on multiple occasions because of this.

It's really NOT that hard to slide the doorstop in front of the door. I just slide it over with my foot when I'm leaving the bathroom, and it takes maybe one second to do.

Yesterday I sold my principles down the river and interviewed for one of few jobs I said I would never get desperate enough to apply and interview for - outbound telesales.

Oh yes, the very people I hang up on and swear about on a regular basis.

Oh, that's pretty harsh. I will say, however, that I feel like when I worked in telemarketing it was better than when I worked inbound customer service. Then your entire job description is pretty much having to listen to people bitch.

Telemarketing still sucks, though. Looking on the bright side, it's still a job!

The only reason I interviewed and the only reason i'm hoping I get it. I really am scraping the bottom of the barrel now and really need a job. I've needed one for a long, long time but it's really getting ridiculous now.

I'll be miserable doing that for a living and I will need to swallow my pride somewhat but if this goes on much longer there wont be any pride left.

I'm the same. My bathroom is only used by myself, and I leave the lid down because I don't want the cat drinking the water (I have to clean the toilet twice a week because the water is so nasty that mold-type black stuff grows at the water line) but also because I'm just used to putting the lid down and it looks better. Toilet seats and lids that are up just bother me aesthetically.
