The fact of the matter is, music at it's core is about expressing an idea or emotion. It's not about how many people understand that idea or emotion. It's about the ideal itself. Selling a lot of records generally means one of two things: the idea or emotion is a very common one and appeals to a lot of people (i.e. love), or that the idea or emotion displayed on the song or album is one that might not have broad appeal but the musicianship draws people in, due to a simple cadence, or catchy melody, etc etc.
However, in the realm of underground music, the ideal comes (or at least, it should) first. The important thing is the imprint of the feeling/story/whatever. Everything else is secondary. Look at Buried Inside's Chronoclast; the central theme and ideal of it is the monopolization and institution of time and how it is used to control our lives. They could care less if they sold one million records or one hundred, no doubt it would be nice, but that's not the point at all. To equate relevancey to talent is an obscene conjecture. Look at Jazz, Classical (hell the entire Western Art Movement from the early 1600's to now), Metal, etc. The most talented musicians in the world aren't on MTV, they're expressing their ideas and emotions in the medium they do it best. If this does not phase you in the least than I can only conclude two things: 1. You're illiterate and the person who reads posts to you is asleep, or 2. You're so wrapped up in this cocoon spun by Viacom that you refuse to allow any real art into your life. And that is a very sad existence. You are a commercial pawn. Have fun realizing that your entire life is corporately controlled and media managed.

That's why there's american folk, celtic folk, british folk, eastern folk etc etc. It just means roots music. It's not vague when you're area specific but I was being vague when using the term to say that all folk came from people making music for themselves.

2. Who said Tom Waits was folk? 3. Folk music just means its written into the tradition of the people in an area, so if Tom Waits was roman, yes you could 4. The Romans listned to the theatric chorus, war chants, and classical lit

and c'mon oojay, I'll admit that I am home on a Friday night arguing over the internet (being broke tends to do that). But you're doing the same thing, so let's not stoop that low. I really want to know how you're going to respond to that.
