At that point just ask what she wants or send her money. Would it actually be any less thoughtless? Or would sending each other money just make it clear that you're just pointlessly trading her twenty dollar bill for your twenty dollar bill? Would asking what the other wants express more than is comfortable just how little you know about each other at this point?

It is more special than cash, but can be spent like cash. And as far as my friend, I know she counts on the gas card every year and she knows I count on the groceries.

Yeah, so you want to bake some cookies for the postal people to share during Xmas? Sure. You wanna give a $20 gift card for their service. Sure. ...but don't have some harebrained idea that it's some kind of damn conspiracy between capitalist overlords and the postal service. |
