I can't tell if I'm being affected by a head cold or my brain is pulling a Syd Barrett on me.

Maybe it's a tumor.

Yeah, cause there's nothing as quick and painless as cancer.

In that case I'd prefer an aneurysm.

I've had to do it twice now. God it tears your heart out as the little body goes cold (tearing up now just remembering it) but I feel it's the very last thing you can do for your beloved pet, is be with them when they breathe their last, so they're not alone. Maybe they don't realise you're there, but I feel better (and much worse) knowing I stayed with them to the end.

It's something you never, ever forget though. The first of the two, Spooky, lived a terrible last six months, when she had lost control of her faculties and had to be secured in a cage in the kitchen to keep her away from the other cats. It used to break my heart, but the worst thing was taking that cage outside and dismantling it in the back garden that night, tears blinding me and the neighbours probably wondering what the hell was wrong with me. I just couldn't look at it one minute longer, even though it was hell itself to take it apart.

Thanks for making me feel even lower.

One of my great regrets was not staying for that last moment with a dear cat that was put to sleep. I was distraught, the doctor said something like "It's better to remember them as they were" or some BS like that and it sounded good at the time. I have never forgiven myself.
