I bet with a nice cardigan it'd fall into "business casual".

I'm in IT. Thanks, I think it just depends on the business. They want us to turn up professional because clients supposedly come to campus. Can't say I've ever seen anyone I don't recognise in the computer lab. They are getting strict because there has been many students wearing sneakers/tshirts etc and it had not being properly enforced. The institute was bought by another institute which explains the new conditions.

Conversations like these make me glad that:

A) I don't work in a field that heavily scrutinizes dress code.
B) I'm not a woman so even if I did I'd probably just need a casual suit and I could wear that to just about anything.

On topic, it doesn't sound like what you were wearing should be considered inappropriate.

Totally. I love cardigans, they're practically my uniform.

Wouldn't working in IT be difficult in a dress? I mean, if you're not hunched over a computer you're crouching down and stuff fixing wires n shit.

IT shouldn't really need a dress code but then again I'm still in study so perhaps a company I work for in the future won't require such conservative expectations. Maybe they are not used to seeing female IT students dress up?

Nope, there is many fields in IT. I'm doing programming which literally requires me to sit a computer all day and create code.

It is most likely the fact that it goes above your knees most likely. Look into maybe pencil skirts and I agree with Pedo about a cardigan or some other top that covers your shoulders.

I've always found dress codes to be bizarre and arbitrary. I'm a decade and a half into my career and I still don't get it.

I remember working at Disney and all of the rules their dress code entailed. One ring on each finger, earrings no larger than a quarter, facial hair had to be groomed a certain way. It wasn't hard to follow but it was definitely strict. There's not much I can't wear in my current line of work, so long as it's not skimpy. I'm kind of bound by necessity though, it's not easy to run around or pick up infants in a dress - and it sucks to go home with them covered in dirt/paint/baby food/other things I won't mention.
