I feel you; a month-ish on Celexa and I don't feel much better; just prescribed something else in conjunction.

My bitch: I have been hating that mental health professionals have all been telling me the same thing:

God has a plan for me, and that's why my suicide attempt failed.

That does not align with my beliefs. I was apparently near-dead and resuscitated, but there was nothing religious about it. It was nature; I overdosed, and was given effective treatment which happened to work. It wasn't "God;" it was people.

Giving me the notion that God was watching out for me as therapy is bull****, and I'm not ecstatic about being the ******* like, "Nah, it was just chance, and your superstition is pissing me off."

I have had TWO psychiatrists, THREE doctors of general medicine in the ICU, multiple nurses, two social workers, and a therapist express this to me. How do I shut it down without coming off like a jerk?

I find it odd that they all feel that way, and I understand why you would be upset if they told you that "god had plans for you". It's kind of hard to tell someone who is trying to be positive for you when it goes against what you believe, but that doesn't mean you can't interject what you feel in a tact way. I know I've said to a few of my christian friends in the past that just because something doesn't have a purpose, that doesn't mean it's pointless. "Life is what you make it" so to say, but enough of my patronizing, what are your beliefs exactly?

I would just tell them in no uncertain terms that you don't share their beliefs and that those comments are very unhelpful to you. Or, if you're feeling snarky, maybe ask them if there are any other inappropriate subjects they'd like to discuss such as their political views or favorite sexual positions. Those people are being extremely unprofessional and really need to be slapped down.

Only one or two more assignments/tests in each class left, and my current grades are A, B-, B-, C+.

My dad might literally disown me (seriously, i'm not kidding). I've never gotten any sort of C but I don't know how I'm going to avoid getting one this semester. ****ing spanish. I hate life.

If you're paying them money and they're wasting it by preaching at you then I wouldn't worry about being rude if they persisted with this crap.

Or if they think you were saved because God was looking out for you you could just ask them if that means that God wasn't looking out for the people at the Boston bombing. I imagine the uncomfortable silence that followed would be pretty satisfying.

@ Phanastasio: Ask them if they are aware of the term "Religious Harassment."? It doesn't exist of course but probably should. If someone is essentially forcing their own religious beliefs on you then they're harassing you in just the same way as someone who is trying to force their sexual attentions on you. You didn't ask for them, you don't want them, and they should stick them where the sun don't shine before you start taking legal action.

Maybe that would shut them up.

Also, hope you're doing well in your recovery Sara. We're all thinking about you.

Seq, not a lot I can say except we're here to vent and offer a shoulder if needed.

I hate it when people try to push their beliefs on you. We had a Chinese wan recently trying to tell us all about God and Hell and Heaven. Like, if you don't forgive the most heinous people in your life you'll go to Hell? **** that. This is Ireland, bitch! We wrote the book on religious shame and repression! Don't try to tell us how to suck eggs!
