Sorry, guys. I was really pissed last night. I realize that calling all black metal bands racist, murderous etc. is heavy generalizing. Still, I do not want to immerse myself in the culture because it seems to me that a lot of what it's based on (or was based on) goes against my morals.

I can immerse myself in the culture and its themes to a point. As an atheist I don't have any issue with, and am certainly not offended by, the rebellion against Christianization and the anti-religion themes, yet at the same time the church burnings and black masses arent something I'm going to relate to. However the focus on history, nature, norse mythology and folklore are interesting to me. Some of the idealogy and imagery associated with black metal definitely isnt my thing though. A lot of it actually just makes me laugh.

Anyway, I hope you don't shun the genre as a whole based on a select few individuals or bands, if its a genre you find enjoyment in.

I haven't found much enjoyment in it yet, as I haven't given it much time, but I'm fine with themes of history, folklore and mythology. Some of the reason I have been avoiding it might be that I'm being raised in a christian home, where metal is looked upon a bit critically (also I'm easily offended). Maybe as I get older, I'll be able to look more past lyrical themes.

If you're easily offended, then there are certain black metal bands you probably wont have much success with. But its a huge, diverse genre now. Theres plenty of black metal bands who dont subscribe to any of the themes or ideology anyway.
