The thing is, employers aren't judging you, per-se. They're judging the effect they think you may have on prospective customers. You're nothing but a tool for them, and it's just the way it goes when you're in a chain that deals directly with customers, where a particular image is expected.
It's not a reflection of you, it's a reflection of their business model. Another company in another area, or even the same company in a different area in some cases, is going to have different sets of demographics to which they will try to appeal to depending on their typical customer base. That's why you'll likely see tatted, crazy haired employees in areas that cater to a lot of similar people, like Hot Topic, versus every-day people behind a cash register at Walmart.
It's not personal.
If you do not agree with a company's business model, you are free to chose to work for someone that lets you be yourself, however, I will tell you now that you will have a very hard time getting to where you want to be financially if your entire goal is to have "crazy hair" and a paycheck at the same time.
Sometimes you gotta make sacrifices.
It's up to you to determine whether those sacrifices are too much for you, and whether you are in a position to be able to choose. At some point, you might not be.
