My car does not have cruise control as far as I know. It's also a 2001 when cruise was probably a new thing.

Yes, exactly, it goes off as soon as you apply the brakes so it would be pointless in that situation :) I only ever use it if I'm on a very long stretch of flat, open road with not many other cars around. Helps with staying on 110km a hour as well when you're on one of our long highways like that.
My car is 1999 model so it might just be advanced for its kind?! Haha I don't know...
