'Babe' is OK but 'babes' IS terrible. I agree with Trollheart on that one. I also don't really like the use of 'babe' outside of a relationship. It doesn't strike me as a very appropriate word to use with a friend or acquaintance. In this part of the country 'pet' is the most common one, and I like it a lot. It tends to be used, and to be appropriate, in most forms of a relationship. I won't randomly use them mind, I tend to consider who the person is, my relationship with them, how they are with other people and how well I know them. For example I wouldn't call just anyone 'sweetheart' cause I think it sounds either really sweet or really patronising. I don't necessarily think that its something worth getting angry about or anything, and I personally don't mind it when women do it to me because it's almost always a suggestion that that person is friendly, but its still good manners. |
