Have you thought about just doing school part-time?

That would mean turning my 14 year (worst case scenario) career path into a 28 year one, and in terms of money, I can't afford to pay rent while I bum around in a school for so long.

I'm already thinking about ways to take summer courses to try and advance myself, but I have a job to go home to in order to earn my next batch of tuition, so I can't.

Why is it 14 years? And what are you studying?

Go part time. You'll spend a couple more semesters in school but it's better for you at this rate. I know people who have dropped out of university/college to just go back to work, but now they regret dropping it and want to go back. But then there are people who do fine without higher education. It's up to you.

I've got a degree and post graduate certificate and I can't even find a job yet. Had to study IT to get somewhere.

Psychology. Practical and clinical usage require a doctorate, and just about anything requires a masters minimum. I haven't yet decided to go for the doctorate, but the masters is a necessity.

Still confused about the 14 years. Is that how long it would take to get finish a doctorate in Psychology?

Yeah, even though psychology is a heavy course of study, that seems like a real long time. Even med school takes way less time than that.

It may or may not include the 4 years of post-doctorate work, I'm a bit unclear on that.

A meeting with my prof in two weeks will tell me more about my future.

Here in the US of A, doctoral students get funding from their schools (namely paid a living wage in exchange for teaching classes while they do their doctoral work) and post-doc work is paid - although getting a post-doc position is competitive like getting a real job in the field.
