The ventilation in our apartment is very poor, so I've been noticing a lot of condensation around our windows and bathroom, which of course, leads to mildew. It's nearly fine weather so we can open up all of our windows again, but once the cold weather hits, we'll have the same problem. It bothers me that this stuff is on my windowsills when I sleep at night, and I'm growing paranoid that it's going to become a health risk.
Anybody know about fungi, and how to clean or prevent them? |

How old is the apartment you live in? The HVAC system might need an upgrade or more regular maintenance. Try bringing up the ventilation problem with your landlord/building super if you haven't already done so. Poor HVAC function can also lead to a build-up of carbon monoxide, because it's not exhausting stale air properly. Make sure you have a detector just in case. Here's a site with some good advice on cleaning and prevention of fungi and mold. Antifungal treatment and protection for your home When you take a shower, do you turn on the exhaust fan? That will help too, but remember that it sucks air out of the apartment/house and doesn't replace it. Crack a window open slightly before you turn the fan on, so fresh air will be brought into the house. Yeah it might be a little chilly when you leave the shower but it will cut down on the amount of steam and water being absorbed into the drywall. The house I grew up in had lead paint (until it was stripped many years ago) and has some asbestos insulation. Surprised I got out of there alive, lol. |

Thanks, BD. I'm actually becoming concerned that it may be inside the walls at this point. My roommate, for some reason, doesn't seem to care, and has discouraged me from speaking to our landlord on the grounds that they're not going to tear the building apart from us.
However, it is ****ing toxic, and I want to know if it's going to pose me a health risk, or if she's going to be looking for a new roommate, and that's going to require an investigator that nobody is going to pay for. As for the fan in the bathroom, we do have one, but it does not appear to function particularly well. Apparently we can clean it up temporarily with bleach, but it's going to return as long as there's condensation, and if it's in the walls... Thank you! |

I'm going to see if my landlord will provide me with a dehumidifier as my room gets really damp n its smell is in all of my clothes too. I can't do another winter without it!

**** me, I can't keep this up. Between the mold and the costs of living and the work I've been trying to do, I'm ****ing losing it. I've cried every day for the last week because I'm so stressed out by the work I've been trying to do. I'm seriously wondering if I shouldn't quit and go back to my job, because I don't think I can work this hard for 14 more years.

White vinegar is good for killing mould so that's worth a try too. I had a mould problem in an old flat I lived in. Probably the biggest source of condensation was sleeping with the bedroom door closed. Ultimately it's pretty much a losing battle without better insulation, heating and ventilation.
