I had so many problems with Open Office, like not being able to open files that were sent from Macs (even though they had Microsoft Office docx files). Not to mention not having Power Point to get lecture material outside of class and make presentation slides for assignments (not really a problem, just a personal gripe - I always had to inconveniently use someone else's computer for that). Also was never able to take class notes in a multi-level bullet format. So I switched back to Microsoft Office.

Well in fairness I only use it for writing and for doing the odd spreadsheet, but up to now I've not had a single problem. Mind you, it does have a presentation module, though whether or not it handles Powerpoint I couldn't say. I can open MS Office files easily, though again I've never crossed paths with a Mac, so can't comment there. I suppose if it's impacting on your academic work then you have to go with what suits you best, but for me, here at home, it's the best and easiest solution.
