That isn't just rude, that's ignorance.
In these kind of situations I can only really begin to understand someone being annoyed when two people are talking in a foreign language to each other to deliberately exclude others. Not because they are proud of their language or want to retain their identity or anything, but purely to exclude others. Even then there would be no need to say that to them though, I would just think it was a little rude of them to do that.
The only reason for him to say that to your boyfriend, given those circumstances, would be a dislike of all foreigners. If thats the case, then I doubt many people would be taking his side or seeing things from his point of view if he really is that narrow minded and offensive a person and I hope the next time he visits a foreign country he gets a good kick up the arse back over to you...although that may not be good for you guys.
Besides, you Canadians shouldn't be talking English anyway. Get your own fuc king language. :)
