And he's not at all insufferable about it thankfully.

Well, it’s not some kind of moral thing, it’s just that I don’t like the taste. I’ve had people insist that something they’re drinking is different and good and that I’d surely like it and when I give in to taking a sip, it just tastes revolting. I guess that might be considered a light form of peer/beer pressure, but they’re in a distant past and once you’ve established a preference, then there’s usually no reason to continually remind yourself of them later. That’s about as close to “peer pressure” as I’ve come, I think. It usually the people who do the drinking who are the most vocal about it tho. I generally keep quiet about it cause it’s not a big deal.

Someone once said to me, “well, you just haven’t had good wine” and then offer something expensive and “exquisite” while I, in return, twist my throat muscles in order to let it slip past my taste buds as quick as possible showing that name, background, and price have no effect. I even toured the Guinness Storehouse. It was one of those things you do when in Dublin.

I don’t see any reason to be. To each his own and all that.

Aren't you the guy who drinks steel reserve instead of hard liquor because you think hard liquor is nasty?

And it makes my throat convulse so I'm liable to hurl.

One of my worst ever moments was when someone offered me a shot of Mezcal (my favorite spirit back then) after I smoked a shisha pipe for a couple of hours. It hurt like hell, I spit it out like a bitch and had a throat ache for weeks.

I love the taste of white wine (some reds too) and Guinness but haven't had the desire to have any alcohol for a few years now. Even if I don't drink enough to have a hangover still I feel some sluggishness later.

Nah I don't do pills. Unless they're headache ones, and only when I really can't just stick it out. DON'T DO DRUGS KIDS!

I actually feel you here. For years - literally, years - people would sneer at me when say the work party or whatever was on. "Don't have a Coke, Deryck. Have a real drink!" Idiots. Then you get the other stupid phrase "you'll acquire the taste." What the actual blue jumping on a bed and then running out of the hotel without paying the bill FUCK does that mean? Why would you force yourself to acclimatise to the taste of something? If you don't like it first time, that's a pretty good indicator, no? Oh poison? Ah no, you have to get used to the taste mate. Give me strength.

But yeah, for a short time I gave in, not so much to peer pressure as such but to a sense of maybe isolation: why is everyone laughing? What's so funny? So to fit in (yeah I guess peer pressure really then) I did take a drink. It was all right, but I certainly could live without it. So I used to drink (one, maybe two pints) on social occasions but no more. And I never needed to drink outside of that. And then, when I left work, I had no need at all to drink. And so I don't. The end.

Yes good point TH... Acquired taste is silly and anything that doesn't taste great the first time you have it isn't worth examining any further

It's fine if you guys don't wanna drink cause you don't like getting drunk but if that is the case the taste is kinda besides the point.

Obviously as a person who does consume alcohol i have a hard time relating either to your aversion to being impaired or your child like taste buds... There are plenty of alcoholic drinks that start to taste good once you have the basic taste for alcohol

Meh, just doesn't make sense to me. If I drank alcohol the first time and was like this

then fine, but why push myself to "like" something that doesn't taste good to me the first time? Because it's cool? Because I want to get drunk? Because I want to fit in? Because it's a rite of passage. Because **** all that.
